Middle Thames Yacht Club was founded in 1956, at Richmond upon Thames, moving to Sunbury on Thames in 1960. The objectives of the Club are to promote and encourage motor boating and yachting generally, on the non-tidal and tidal Thames, and to engage in inter-club boating and social activities. The year 2006 marked the Club's 50th anniversary and there were several special celebrations to mark the occasion.

The Club has an attractive location on Sunbury Lock Island with the clubhouse and moorings facing the Sunbury side of the river. Access to the club is possible by club ferry from Sunbury or by using the club car park and a short walk on the Walton side.
