Cruises and Cruising

MTYC organises regular cruises as a Club and also attends rallies organised by other boating groups, such as the annual RNLI Rally, which takes place at Kingston-upon-Thames and the ATYC rally which is held in various Thames based locations.

Early in the year, our annual Commodore's Cruise normally head up river with Windsor being a favourite spot during the end of May Bank Holiday weekend where the weekend is spent frequenting the local pubs, shops and restaurants. Members generally socialise on the river bank and enjoy a splendid buffet provided by the Commodore.

In the past the Club has ventured across the English Channel to France and Belgium and a future trip is proposed to visit the Tall Ships festival in the Netherlands.

During the August Bank Holiday weekend we normally cruise to tidal waters and visit Limehouse Marina or West India Docks. We have also ventured further into the Thames Estuary and explored the river Medway calling in at Rochester.

Traditionally, the more hardy of our Members will get together the day after Boxing Day for the 'Left Over' cruise. Using one or two of our larger member boats we cruise to Hampton Court to take advantage of the temporary ice-skating rink. We finishing back at the Club to enjoy each other's 'left over' food and drink which members bring to the gathering.

River conditions permitting a New Year's Eve cruise to Westminster could be on the menu viewing the incredible London Eye fireworks from the back of your own boat in the heart of London outside the Houses of Parliament and staying overnight at Imperial Wharf.

Sail Past

The Sail Past or “review of the fleet” is steeped in more than 600 years of British Royal Navy tradition and history and was introduced in yacht clubs around the world as a continuation of the naval habit of having Admirals (and/or Royalty) review the fleet on special occasions. Each year our Members honour this Naval tradition and get the chance to dress in their No1's (blazers and whites) and parade in their boats past the Clubhouse in tribute. The current Commodore takes the salute from the Club balcony with each boat lowering their ensigns, in turn, as they pass as a mark of respect for their Club. Afterwards a group picture is taken following which Members can relax and enjoy a splendid buffet washed down with the odd glass or two of vino.
